Note* Mary Pyle and William Peters were appointed as
guardians of Robert while he was a minor. In 1764, the most complete
and detailed tax list for thetownship of Chester County appeared.
(It was called the DomesdayBook, going back to the days of William
the Conqueror, who after the conquest of England in 1066, took a
census of his Englishsubjects and listed their properties for tax
purposes). In theyear 1764, James Booth was the assessor and Isaac
Pyle was the tax collector for Bethel. In that year. Bethel had 24
taxables, among whom were Robert Pyle, with 100 acres with buildings
60 acres (meaning other lands) 2 horses, 4 cattle. 6

Robert, of Bethel, 'gives the Meeting satisfaction by a
cert & testimony of friends of their honest conversation from
whence they came' from England.--Concord MM minutes. Robert obtained
150 acres of land in Bethel May 1-2, 1683, upon which he resided
until his death about 1730. From 'Bethel Township, Delaware Co.,
Thru Three Centuries' by George Walter Goodley Robert Pyle (or Pile)
was born at Thornton, Bishop Cannings Manor in Wiltshire in 1660. He
was by trade a malster, a brewer of malt liquors. He was married in
Friends Meeting in England to Ann Stovey in 1681, and came to Bethel
with his bride. They settled on a 150 acre tract, built a log cabin,
and lived there the rest of their lives. Robert lived until the
1730's, thus being a resident of Bethel almost 50 years. Robert Pyle
must have been a leading citizen of his day and was prime mover in
the Society of Friends. He, with Edward Bezer, held early meetings
of his religious compatriots in his home, out of which came Concord
Meeting. He initiated the movement in Friends Meeting to prevent the
sale or gifts of alcoholic liquors to the Indians. There is reason
to believe that here in Bethel Township the whole Temperance
Movement in America had its beginnings. Beginning in 1688, Pyle was
a representative in the Provincial Assembly for many years. He was a
longtime Justice of the Chester County Court, appointed, with John
Roman of Chichester and Caleb Pusey of Chester Township to settle
the boundary dispute between Pennsylvania and Delaware. Their survey
was accomplished in 1701 and has been accepted as the basis
of settlement of the minor adjustments which have been found
necessary in later years. Pyle took up land in what is the present
Chester County, and many of his descendants have been prominent
there and in many parts of the country to which they have moved. As
we look back through three centuries, we marvel that a man like Robert
Pyle could have accomplished so much during his lifetime,
considering the hard life and difficulties to be overcome in a
primitive community. We remember, however, that he lived longer than
most of his contemporary fellow-settlers. Maltster by trade.
Chichester MM held in his home. Was on a committee to establish
Nottingham Meeting. Initiated the movement in Friends Meeting to
prevent the sale or gifts of alcoholic liquors to the Indians. By
1722, had extended holdings to Marlborough in present Chester Co.,
PA where his family became established.
